Land & Context

These figures don't change what's needed — they give the results scale. Is the land required a rounding error or half the country's cropland? Without changing the model, your own land and fuel figures simply become one more input to consider — which is what lets a community plan with the same tool.

Context in use — comparison values only; the requirement itself is set on Pages 1–4

At paper values the reserve covers 21 days — the government storage mandate.

New Zealand's cropland

Paper default

How much land New Zealand already crops: 487,783 ha of grain land and 132,717 ha of horticulture.1 Grain land — not the total — is what canola percentages are measured against.2

Grain land — hapaper: 487,783
Horticulture — ha132,717
Total cropped — haauto sum
Worth knowing: keeping grain land and total cropped land as two clearly separate numbers matters — mixing them up understates the canola percentage (0.7% instead of 0.9% in the baseline). The total here is always the sum, never entered.

What's grown today

Paper default

Current crop areas, for comparing "required" against "already there": wheat 43,500 ha,3 potatoes 9,450 ha,4 dairy 1,730,000 ha,5 canola just 710 ha.6

Wheat — ha43,500
Potatoes — ha9,450
Dairy — ha1,730,000
Canola — ha710
Worth knowing: the gap between required and current area is where the expansion pressure shows — e.g. wheat feeding everyone needs ~117,000 ha against 43,500 grown today. Canola's 710 ha shows how far a biofuel industry would have to scale.

Future addition: regional breakdowns (which districts hold the cropland).

National fuel picture

Paper default

New Zealand consumes 3.701 billion litres of diesel a year7 — consumption, not supply. The mandated reserve holds 213 million litres, sized as 21 days.8 Agriculture's off-road share is 295 M L; dairy alone 95 M L.7

Annual diesel consumption — Lpaper: 3,701,000,000
Diesel reserve — Lpaper: 213,000,000
Worth knowing: the reserve figure is a national aggregate under a 21-day mandate (a further 7 days of government-procured storage exists, ≈284 M L total). What is actually reachable in your district during a disruption is a different question.

Future addition: petrol/electricity context for non-diesel machinery.

Your context

Tool extension

For a town, marae, or district doing its own planning: enter your growing land and your local fuel storage, and results compare against these instead of national figures. Not part of the paper — this box is yours.

Your available growing land — haoptional
Your local fuel storage — Loptional
Worth knowing: pair this with a community population on Page 1 and the tool becomes local: how much of our land would feeding us take? These values carry no paper backing and are always badged as your own.

Future addition: soil / water suitability of your land; sharing a saved local scenario.
